Conklin House Hosts a Halloween Extravaganza

The Conklin House was home to the very first Halloween celebration last weekend and visitors enjoyed pumpkin carvings and scary stories.

The first annual Halloween Celebration last weekend at the Conklin House was a hit with Babylon area kids, who came for an early afternoon lesson in how to carve elaborate pumpkins.

Later that night kids toured the grounds of the historic landmark building, transformed into a haunted yard, with gruesome attractions and spooky suprises around the normally staid and picturesque site.

Two sessions of dramatic readings of macabre classics by Edgar Allen Poe and other authors completed the night's spookfest, with an earlier reading for children and a later reading for teens and adults.

Don't worry if you missed it this year. Viriginia (Ginger) Behrens, a volunteer who helped organize the events, said she thinks it will become an annual tradiion.

"We're expecting lots of kids to come visit the yard once it gets dark. We're just trying out different things. It's all new but we've have had a good turnout and I think it will be back next year."
