Fallen Babylon Nassau County PD Officer Honored

Officer gunned down in line of duty in October added to memorial wall.

Governor Andrew Cuomo honored 16 fallen police officers from across New York State, including Babylon Village resident Arthur Lopez.

"Our brave men and women in New York law enforcement are the finest in the country and today, we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in protecting their friends and neighbors,” Governor Cuomo said in a statement. “Each day, members of law enforcement say goodbye to their loved ones as they head off to their next shift."

He added: "Today we honor those New Yorkers in law enforcement who never made it back home. Today we honor their sacrifice, we pay tribute to their families and loved ones, and we thank them for their selfless acts to protect their fellow New Yorkers."

Lopez, often called "Artie," was shot and killed on October 23, 2012 when he pulled over a car on the Cross Island Parkway.

Lopez was allegedly shot by Darrell Fuller, a Queens man, sparking off a huge manhunt which ended after New York City Police officers found Fuller with a self-inflicted gun wound.

Lopez, along with 15 other officers, had their names added during the state's 22nd annual Police Officers' Memorial Remembrance Ceremony. Their names were added to the memorial's polished black granite wall, bringing the state's total of honored fallen officers to 1,340.
