First Precinct Officer Named Top Cop

Babylon Town officials honor a patrol officer for his community patrol efforts.

A First Precinct Suffolk County Police Officer currently deployed overseas in his role as a marine is Babylon Town’s 2011 Top Cop for his community patrol efforts this year.

Jason J. Magurno, on patrol in Deer Park for more than five years, has made more than 80 arrests, including 53 DWI arrests. Town officials said his work's made the community safer for residents and motorists.

“Officer Magurno is an outstanding and dedicated police officer who's a shining example of service and commitment. His devotion to duty has undoubtedly spared many families from tragic consequences, which are all too often caused by intoxicated drivers,” stated a town press release about the award.

Babylon Town officials also recently honored the 2011 graduates of the Parent Leadership Initiative program, which is focused on ensuring and improving the quality of childcare through Suffolk County.

Town officials said PLI is based on the belief that the family is the heart of the community, that parents can be their children’s most significant teachers and their strongest advocates in addressing the needs of children and families.

PLI is a series of workshops where participants are guided through the process of discovering and engaging resources starting within their local communities and then beyond. PLI also presents speakers to the group who could lend insight into how local government works and what's available for the participants and all residents.

Graduates of PLI have reported they're more willing to advocate for themselves and their children. They're not as intimidated speaking in front of a group. Their desire to “be a part of change” is heightened now that they've the tools.  In order to facilitate participation PLI provides licensed care providers for the children of participants. Nutritionally balanced meals are also provided for parents and children.
