If there is one golden aspect to the impending Hurricane Irene scenario it’s that the storm isn’t arriving during the work week, though cleanup on Monday could make commuting and travel a bit of a challenge.
The Long Island Rail Road is advising riders that this weekend’s service will be impacted and to expect the worse case scenario come Saturday and Sunday.
“We are making arrangements to bring in extra personnel over the weekend, preparing our facilities and infrastructure by clearing drains, securing work sites against possible high winds, checking and fueling equipment, stocking supplies, and establishing plans to move equipment and supplies away from low-lying areas as needed,” states a special advisory posted on the MTA’s special weather alert page.
The LIRR warns severe winds and rain in a hurricane situation may shut down some or all of services.
“We urge our customers to check mta.info frequently and to consider the impacts of this storm when making travel plans through the weekend,” states the notice.
Yesterday the LIRR announced it was already canceling some trains to the East End over the weekend to allow crews to prep and secure equipment before the storm system hits.
