Photo-Op: Banned Bamboo

Babylon Village's ban on planting bamboo may have come just in time for village parks, as this photograph shows.

Running bamboo, the bane of many a neighbor and landscaper, is notorious for spreading its roots under fences, across roads and into unwanted spaces. The asphalt pathway along Siegel Boulevard bordering the Southards Pond greenbelt appears to be no exception, as Patch cameras spotted some bamboo shoots growing right through the asphalt, as if it were barely there.

A nearby stand of the plant was mixed in with the native reeds and trees in the wooded area. Homeowners who have existing bamboo are required to add metal sheafing to block the roots from spreading to neighbors' homes.
