Swimming Pool Might Not Be Ready for Opening

Babylon Village Pool grounds will open to public on July 6, but pool is a maybe.

Update (6:15 p.m.): AroundBabylon blogger Aaron Stein notes Trustee Davida said the pool will be open when the grounds open this Saturday. Cannonball!

Original Story: The Babylon Village Pool grounds will open for business this Friday, July 6, but the pool itself might not be ready, according to village trustee Tony Davida.

"We want to open July 6, but we are having difficulties with the contractor getting the work done on time," Davida said during the June 25 village board meeting.

The pool, which was heavily damaged by Hurricane Sandy in October, required a rebuilding process that extended nearly eight months. The rebuilt pool now falls within Suffolk County laws that require a railing be put around it to prevent small children from running into it unattended.

While the pool might not be ready, Davida said the grounds on the Great South Bay will be opened.

"We are going to open the facility and the picnic areas so if people want to come down and relax, they can," Davida said. Summer employees have been hard at work at the southern-most Fire Island Avenue South location.

The kiddie pool, which does not feature a depth any deeper than 2 feet, will be open for use on opening day.

Ralph Scordino, village mayor, said he would work on getting the contractor to on task to have the pool opened as soon as possible.

When the railings are installed, the village pool is ready to go that day, Davida noted.

"The pool is full and ready to go, it's just the issue with the contractor stopping us," he said.
