Talk Back: The Canada Geese Problem

What do you think should be done about the overabundance of geese in local parks like Argyle Lake?

It's hard not to notice the overpopulation of Canada geese around Babylon: from Argyle Park to Hawley's Pond, if there's grass, there's probably plenty of geese around, too. The once-migratory birds have set up year-round shop, and without predators, it can seem that some parks are one big geese hatchery.

Because of concerns over the birds' waste, overgrazing of lawns, and the environmental impact on waterways, Canada geese have become more than just an annoyance for park strollers. The Town of Babylon has implemented a Waterfowl Management Control Program but currently only includes Town-maintained parks in the program, which includes posting signs discouraging feeding the geese, controlled dog harassment, and egg oiling to keep the population down.

When New York City implemented a geese culling program two years ago, the mass gassings attracted vocal protests over whether or not the measures were humane or avoidable.
