Town Refurbishing Skate Park at Tanner Park

New skatepark renovations will cost the town around $100,000.

The Town of Babylon has awarded a contract to start the refurbishing of the skate park at Tanner Park.

According to a report by The Babylon Beacon, the town awarded a contract to Bridgeport-based Rampage Skate Park Equipment, which produces skatepark equipment that reportedly last long due to high quality.

“The Town of Babylon Department of Public Works will be supervising the project and it is anticipated to be completed sometimes in the fall,” Kevin Bonner, the director of communications for the Town of Babylon, told The Beacon. “Due to its location on the water, the skate park fell into disrepair over time and became unsafe."

The renovations will cost the town upwards of $100,000, Bonner said.

The skatepark, the only town-owned park, was heavily used by skaters throughout the year, even though the park was technically closed for the last two years. Less than a half-mile from the shoreline though, the skatepark face the flooding wrath of Hurricane Sandy last year.

We will be keeping the old structure, but will be replacing the old platforms in order to make the ramps safer," councilman Tony Martinez told The Beacon. “We are happy to be able to complete these low-cost renovations and reopen the Tanner Park skate park for our youth to safely enjoy."

The skatepark hosted an event called the Red Bull Manny Mania where skaters gathered to compete for a spot in the Red Bull Manny Mania World Final for amateurs in New York City in 2010.

There was no reported expected time of completion for the project.
