Village Board Briefs: Jan. 22nd Meeting

Board approves new Deputy Village Clerk and announces big openings for pool reconstruction.

The Babylon Village Board of Trustees held a regular meeting at Babylon Village Hall on Tuesday, January 22nd, discussing a wide variety of topics during their meeting.

The following resolutions were brought before the board for discussion and decision:

  • The board approved Jeannie Finelli to the positions of Deputy Village Clerk and Secretary to the Board of Trustees until March 2013.
  • The board approved a rescheduled big opening on the concrete retaining wall of the Village Pool on January 31st.
  • The board approved a bid opening on the bulkhead replacement at the Village Pool on January 31st.
  • The board approved a rebid on the roofing and building repairs at the Village Pool for February 14th.
  • The board approved the Babylon Village Arts Council to hold an outdoor art exhibit on May 18th and 19th at Argyle Park.
  • The board tabled a request from the Post Office Cafe for a live band for another date.
  • A public hearing will be held on February 12 at 7 p.m. to discuss the following local laws:
    • A law allowing the village to raise the tax levy cap for the upcoming year, in the possibility it is necessary to do so.
    • A law allowing the village to award bids for projects based on the best value rather than the lowest price.

As I explained, my post was made on behalf of another village resident. However, I did take theRead More time to read the statute and do have an independent viewpoint on this subject. While I do not feel that all dogs require a muzzle at all times, if you have a dog that you know to be a threat to other dogs or humans, you would have a duty to take measures to eliminate that threat before bring that dog into public. If that measure is a muzzle, then that's what must be done. As my post indicated, I believe strict enforcement would be exceedingly difficult and, perhaps, unnecessary (at least with respect to the muzzle requirement). However, a total lack of enforcement is dangerous and unacceptable. I think a little common sense goes a long way and I have confidence that those charged with enforcing the Village code could do so selectively. I understand that selective enforcement may be a concept that many feel uncomfortable with. However, just because the law requires a muzzle, that is hardly a reason to disregard it in its entirety and allow dogs with vicious propensities to roam around unleashed. I will leave it up to Village lawmakers to remove the muzzle requirement (and suggest that they do so) if that is what it would take to make people comfortable with the leash requirement.
