W. Babylon Contaminated Areas Focus of DEC Meeting

Public can offer input on cleanup plan Tuesday in Wyandanch.

Local residents will have an opportunity Tuesday night to offer input on the cleanup of a contaminated area of West Babylon.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation will hold a public meeting Tuesday focused on the Proposed Remedial Action Plan of sites owned by Pride Solvents and Chemical Co. The meeting is set for 7 p.m. at the Wyandanch Senior Center, 28 Wyandanch Ave.

The contaminated sites are in an industrial area at 78 Lamar Street and 88 Lamar Street.

According to Newsday, there are two areas of contamination: a shallow plume approximately 20 feet down from the ground’s surface, and a second that runs below 20 feet.

In addition to Tuesday’s meeting, the DEC’s public comment period runs through January 30.
