Babylon BOE Finalizes $47M Budget for 2013-14

District's proposed budget increases 2.84 percent from this year's total.

The Babylon School District Board of Education put the finishing touches on the budget being presented to voters on May 21, officially finalizing the 2013-2014 proposed budget during a public board meeting on Monday evening.

The proposed budget slashed over $1 million off of the first draft shown in early March, bringing the 2013-2014 school year's projected total budget to $47,577,812.

The budget will increase roughly $1.3 million, or 2.8 percent, from the current 2012-2013 budget if it gains approval from voters in May.

The tax rate will increase about 3.11 percent, translating to an estimated $199.73 per $100 of assessed value. The Town of Babylon sets the assessed value for homes in the Babylon School District.

In a presentation before the board voted to approve the budget, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Peter Daly noted the major increases in this year's budget were from the New York State Teachers' Retirement System, which increased over $789,800 and accounts for over 16 percent of the budget's payroll.

Without the substantial increase, Dr. Daly said, the district's proposed budget would have only been 1.14 percent higher.

The board will hold a Budget Hearing on May 13 and the district vote will take place on May 21.
