Babylon Class of 2013 Valedictorian: Delaney Cassidy

Babylon's top student will head to Worcester Polytechnic Institute this fall.

Delaney Cassidy, Babylon's 2013 valedictorian, will take the stage at graduation this Saturday as the top student among her fellow graduating seniors, with 13 years of schooling paying off in the district's top honor.

"I was very surprised when my guidance counselor Mrs. Murphy brought me into her office and told me I was the valedictorian," Cassidy told Patch. "It is an honor that I never would have imagined receiving when I first entered the school in 7th grade."

The standout lacrosse star will head to Worcester Polytechnic Institute this fall looking to earn a degree in Biomedical Engineering – a major she chose following her favorite high school class, AP Biology, in the 11th grade.

Cassidy wrapped up her high school career with an astounding 103.669 grade-point average, besting the next closest student by a margin of 0.7 points.

And while she's used to being in the spotlight whether it was from sports or the many academic honors she's been awarded over the years, Cassidy said she still feels butterflies when it comes to thinking about the upcoming speech she will give this Saturday.

"I am extremely nervous," she said. "I have never been more nervous for anything in my life... I hope everything works out."

Babylon's Class of 2013 will graduate from the football field in a ceremony at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.
