Babylon Elementary Takes Part In Int'l Walk to School Day

Students from Babylon Elementary School walked to school on October 3rd as part of International Walk to School Day, an initiative created to improve neighborhood connections, promote physical activity and create a cleaner environment.

 “International Walk to School Day is a great event that we participate in every year,” Babylon Elementary School Principal Dana Basile said. “We had several staff members greeting families as they arrived in the front circle of the school, and the students received stickers showing their participation in the event.”

According to WalkBikeToSchool.org, International Walk to School Day began in the United States in 1997 as a one-day event aimed at building awareness for the need for walkable communities. The event became international in 2000 when England and Canada joined the effort.

Communities and schools are using the day as a first step in changing community culture, and to create options for getting to school that are more inviting for families. Not only does walking bring a sense of joy and independence, it’s also a chance for students and their parents to get the physical activity they need. Walking to school can also create a cleaner environment by reducing traffic congestion and air-polluting car emissions, while also boosting a sense of community.
