Babylon High School Receives Silver Rating from US News & World Report

The recently released report ranks the school 138th in New York State.

US News & World Report recently released its annual Best High Schools report and Babylon was awarded a "silver" medal. Babylon Junior-Senior High School was ranked 138th within New York State, and comes in at number 1,099 out of 21,776 public high schools in the country.

The report's overview of Babylon stated that "Students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement coursework and exams. The AP participation rate at Babylon Junior-Senior High School is 42 percent. The student body makeup is 50 percent male and 50 percent female, and the total minority enrollment is 16 percent."

The report analyzed 1,165 schools in New York State across 667 districts. 370 schools in the state were awarded gold, silver, or bronze medals, which qualified the school for inclusion in the Best High Schools 2012 list. 68 New York schools were awarded a gold medal, while Babylon was one of 174 to be considered silver medalists. The rankings take into account state proficiency standards, how well schools prepare students for college, and other factors.

Interim Superintendent of Schools Peter R. Daly was happy with the news: "We are pleased to learn that Babylon Junior-Senior High School is ranked in the top 20% of high schools in New York State,” he said.

“We are proud of our students’ academic achievements and that our graduates are college-ready upon graduation. Of course, our goal continues to be to improve student achievement on all levels.”  

Four Long Island schools—in Rockville Centre, Jericho, Commack and Locust Valley—made it into the top 100 in the country.

Babylon's "college readiness index" was 29.7, a number that is calculated based on percentage of students who take AP exams, and their performance. For comparison, Commack High School, which came in number 95 in the US, had a college readiness index of 74.2.
