FDNY Firefighter Speaks with Forest Avenue Elementary Students

Guest speaker was part of a series on community helpers.

Kindergarten students of Forest Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District were visited by New York City firefighter Robert Stuart on March 7.

As part of their thematic study on community helpers, the kindergartners had the opportunity to ask questions about Mr. Stuart’s job. During the visit, Mr. Stuart explained the responsibilities of being a firefighter and shared with students several aspects of fire safety. He also demonstrated the equipment used to fight fires. One highlight of the program for these young students was seeing teachers Carolyn Bogart and Patricia Stuart dressed in firefighter’s gear.

"Our students learn about our community helpers in school through various lessons and books, but we know that seeing a firefighter in full gear is something that could intimidate young students,” said Ms. Bogart. “In addition to reinforcing the concepts of fire safety, this kind of exposure helps to alleviate any fears they may have and reassures them that in a crisis, a firefighter is truly a helper in our community."
