Fire Island Schools Reopen for New Year

Barrier island students head back to the school district.

Not even scattered showers could dampen the spirits of students in the Fire Island School District when they eagerly returned to school on Sept. 3.

With backpacks filled with new school supplies, they boarded familiar yellow buses and arrived at Woodhull Elementary School. After being greeted by teachers and administrators, the students were escorted to their classrooms, where they settled in for a new school year.

Students were reminded of key bus safety items when they participated in a bus drill on the second day of school. They went over the proper behavior to exhibit while traveling to and from school and practiced the correct way to evacuate a school bus in the case of an emergency.
