New BOCES District Superintendent Is Former W. Babylon Teacher

Eastern Suffolk BOCES named Dean T. Lucera as a new District Superintendent/Chief Executive Officer starting August 1st.

The Eastern Suffolk BOCES Board of Education announced the appointment of Dean T. Lucera as District Superintendent and Chief Executive Officer effective August 1, 2012. Lucera was appointed as District Superintendent "based on his extensive experience as an educator within Suffolk County," according to a release by BOCES.

“Mr. Lucera’s accomplishments and background make him an outstanding choice and valuable asset for this position,” said Mrs. Lisa Israel, ESBOCES Board of Education President, in the press release. “He has been actively involved in the ESBOCES Leadership Team for many years and understands the issues and difficulties facing our region’s school districts, the importance of being the Eastern Suffolk BOCES representative to the region’s Commissioner of Education and his responsibility to represent the needs of the region to the Commissioner.”

Lucera will report to the New York State Commissioner of Education on the behalf of ESBOCES assessing the educational components and the needs of ESBOCES member school districts as a part of his new role. He will work closely with Gary Bixhorn, ESBOCES Chief Operating Officer, in continuing to ensure that the educational needs of its students are met and to review ESBOCES’ ongoing initiatives.

“I am honored to have been selected as District Superintendent and Chief Executive Officer,” said Lucera in the press statement. “I am looking forward to working with the members of our board as well as parents, teachers and students to successfully move Eastern Suffolk BOCES toward the next level of educational excellence.”

Lucera has been in several administrative positions at ESBOCES including his present assignment as Director of Career, Technical and Adult Education. He joined the BOCES staff in 2004 after a long teaching career in the West Babylon School District.

Lucera has also served on the Executive Board of the Suffolk County High School Principals Association and currently serves as Vice President of the Long Island Association for Career and Technical Education.
