Photo of the Day: Eating Right Reward

Every day Patch brings a photo to readers about people, places and happenings in the village and West Babylon communities.

Babylon Junior High School seventh-grade students Michael Logan and Quinn LaRock, members of the school’s Family and Consumer Sciences Breakfast Club, are the first-place winners in the Long Island Family and Consumer Science (LIFACS) Healthy Snack Challenge.

The students won with their low-fat, chocolate-covered strawberries with pistachios and blueberries snack against a pool of 80 contestants that participated across Long Island. They attended the LIFACS dinner with their families and received a framed certificate and $100 check for their efforts.

A committee from LIFACS judged the entries on calories (no more than 200 calories), nutrients (must contain at least one of the six essential nutrients), visual appeal, palatability, taste, and flavor. The students included all six essential nutrients in their recipe and their healthy snack was only 83 calories per serving.

The school’s Breakfast Club has a total of 45 members, which is nearly double the participation level of last year.
