UPDATED: School Board VP Resigns Post

Babylon’s school board vice president Cathy Vukovich resigned from her post effective Friday, March 31, and residents will now elect four trustees on May 17.

The news was first made public in a notice Friday by the school district on its website. The board made a formal announcement Monday during the public portion of a special meeting the board held relating to discussion of a memorandum of residency and candidates for the soon-to-be vacant superintendent position during the executive session portion of the meeting.

The board has made no policy change relating to residency and trustees requirements. All trustees are required to be village residents. With regard to the superintendent position, the board has not yet made a decision on a replacement or a candidate search approach.

Vukovich was first elected to the board in 2006 and was in the second year of her second term. 

“The Board of Education and district thank Ms. Vukovich for her five years of service to the Babylon School District and wish her well,” states the board's announcement.

The resignation is the latest of several personnel changes taking place in the Babylon School District.

Current school chief Dr. Ellen Best-Laimit announced in late March that she is retiring and leaving her job effective August 31 after five years as superintendent. The board recently appointed a new principal, Al Cirone, for the Junior-Senior High School effective July 1, 2011. He will replace Robert Visbal, who is retiring.

The search for a new principal for the Babylon Memorial Grade School is still in progress.
