South Bay Elementary Students Enjoy a Seashore Safari

Students get hands-on with crabs, snails, sea stars and hermit crabs.

First-graders in Debbie LoSardo’s class at South Bay Elementary School in the West Babylon School District recently explored a variety of sea life during the Seashore Safari that took place in their classroom.

The hands-on lesson gave students the opportunity to use their five senses and interact with animals, allowing them to feel the pinchers of a horseshoe crab, hum to mud snails in an effort to coax them out of their shells, race sea stars and let hermit crabs tickle their palms.

The students also discussed several facts about their experiences and wrote stories about one of the animals they had observed based on what they had learned.
