Tooker Avenue Students Learn About Plant Life Cycles

Students get their hands dirty and learn all about the biology of plants.

Second-grade students of Tooker Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District got their hands dirty during a science lesson on the plant cycle.

Students explored the parts and growth process of a plant and then put their lessons into action by planting cosmos and zinnias. In addition to the plant cycle, students studied the life cycle of a butterfly and examined five larvae in their classrooms.

Their cross-curricular study, which included poetry writing in honor of National Poetry Month, culminated in the release of the butterflies in the schoolyard.

"It is wonderful for the students to take part in these types of hands-on lessons,” teacher AnnMarie Ayerle. “They provide them with a wonderful opportunity to experience the concepts they've learned about in a real-life scenario."
