W. Babylon Students Get to Core of Learning

Students at Tooker Avenue identify their own personal learning goals for the year.

Speech-language students of Tooker Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District are “getting to the core” of the New York State Common Core Learning Standards under the direction of speech-language pathologist Donna Pomilla.

While participating in a series of apple-themed language lessons involving articulation, memory, phonemic awareness and literacy, students identified the personal learning goals they are working towards this year. The students’ goals are aligned with the Common Core Learning Standards and written on apple cores created by the students to serve as reminders.

"During our sessions, the speech-language pathologists at Tooker Elementary realize the importance of aligning our student goals with West Babylon’s curriculum and with the Common Core Standards,” said Ms. Pomilla. "This seemed like an appropriate way to do so while involving the students in the process."
