W. Babylon Students Particpate in STOPPED Program

Students learn about dangers of drunk driving with vision-altering goggles.

During their weekly driver’s education lecture, juniors and seniors of West Babylon High School took part in an interactive anti-drunken driving program known as the STOPPED Program.

Students had the opportunity to participate in a simulated drunken driving experience by wearing vision-altering goggles and driving a buggy through a course of traffic cones, which represented pedestrians, and other common driving obstacles.

Those students were also invited to take a sobriety test while wearing the goggles. Prior to taking the wheel, Deputy Sheriffs Thomas Indence and Thomas Bivona from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office shared information with students regarding the laws and consequences of driving under the influence.

“It was much better to learn like this than to discuss statistics in a lecture,” said incoming senior Alyssa Downes. “It was scary to see how impaired your driving was. It really leaves an impact.”
