April is National Autism Awareness Month, and for the second consecutive year, South Bay Elementary School in the West Babylon School District held a “Light It Up Blue Day” in commemoration of World Autism Day.

Students and staff were invited to wear blue and take part in activities such as writing positive messages of awareness in graffiti on walls and listening to read-alouds in the classrooms.

At Tooker Avenue Elementary School, all classes participated in an activity with puzzle pieces – the symbol of autism – in which each classroom was given a large puzzle piece to decorate. The pieces were decorated in ways that applied the concepts of character education as they pertain to autism awareness. When completed, the puzzle pieces were joined, resulting in a prominent display in the school’s hallway.
