What's Open & Closed in Babylon: Oct. 31st

Day three of the effects of Hurricane Sandy is upon us and closings are ongoing throughout the village.

Hurricane Sandy is now over 24-hours from our area, but her effects are still being felt throughout Babylon Village and nearby communities. Many of our local schools, businesses and organizations are remaining closed with power still out, roads still blocked and some homes in the flood zone completely uninhabitable.

If you own a business or organization and would like to announce its closure, please do so by adding a comment below or email the editor.

Closed or Cancelled for Wednesday, October 31st

  • All Babylon Schools
    • All athletic practices, after school and evening activities are cancelled
  • All North Babylon Schools
  • All West Babylon Schools
  • St. John the Baptist High School (West Islip)
  • Alphabet Kids
  • Just Kids Early Childhood Center (Lindenhurst)
  • St. Joseph's Nursery School
  • The Early Childhood Center of West Babylon
  • United Methodist Nursery School
  • West Babylon Public Library
  • Most Babylon businesses along Main Street and Deer Park Avenue (except Monsoon). The Halloween in the Business District event is, all likelihood, cancelled due to power outages.
    • Coastal Treasures
    • Positions Dance Studio
    • Post Office Cafe
    • Posh Salon
    • Fitness Incentive (will open if there is power at 4:45 a.m. check)
  • Most areas south of Montauk Highway (Main Street) have limited access – only residents and emergency personel will have some ability to manuever in the area.

Please note it does appear Babylon Village Hall will be open during the day, however like most of the village, it does not have power at this time.

As I explained, my post was made on behalf of another village resident. However, I did take theRead More time to read the statute and do have an independent viewpoint on this subject. While I do not feel that all dogs require a muzzle at all times, if you have a dog that you know to be a threat to other dogs or humans, you would have a duty to take measures to eliminate that threat before bring that dog into public. If that measure is a muzzle, then that's what must be done. As my post indicated, I believe strict enforcement would be exceedingly difficult and, perhaps, unnecessary (at least with respect to the muzzle requirement). However, a total lack of enforcement is dangerous and unacceptable. I think a little common sense goes a long way and I have confidence that those charged with enforcing the Village code could do so selectively. I understand that selective enforcement may be a concept that many feel uncomfortable with. However, just because the law requires a muzzle, that is hardly a reason to disregard it in its entirety and allow dogs with vicious propensities to roam around unleashed. I will leave it up to Village lawmakers to remove the muzzle requirement (and suggest that they do so) if that is what it would take to make people comfortable with the leash requirement.

Did you read the law? unless it be properly muzzled and effectively restrained by a chain or leashRead More I'll bet neither dog was muzzled Do you really want them to enforce this law
