Babylon Holds On For Win at Bayport

Expecting a victory against win-less Bayport-Blue Point, the Panthers jump out to an early lead that the Phantoms can't overcome.

For a while on Thursday, it looked like Babylon would have a laugher against Division IV rival Bayport-Blue Point. But a wild fourth quarter, which saw the Panther’s defense give up 19 points, turned a ho-hum game into something just short of a nail-biter.

In the end, the Panthers (3-2) held on for a 43 – 27 win against the Phantoms (0-5) at Bayport’s Bob Sullivan Field.

Babylon stuck to its ground game, with quarterback Zach Fredericks rushing for 163 yards and a touchdown, and running back Grant Shannon adding 119 yards and three touchdowns. Fredericks also threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Greg Dieterich.

Of concern to Babylon coaches and fans had to be the passing yardage that its defense gave up. Bayport quarterback Bailey Imbo threw for 266 yards and three touchdowns (he also threw four interceptions, three courtesy of Nahari Jenkins). In a fourth quarter that saw Bayport rally from a 36 – 8 deficit to within nine at 36 – 27, the Panthers gave up touchdown passes of 60, 11 and four yards.

Next up for Babylon: The Panthers host Port Jefferson (4-1) on October 15, at 2 p.m.
