Babylon Panthers Awarded Rutgers Trophy

Trophy is given to the best team in Suffolk County, as voted on by Suffolk coaches.

Football season may be over, but the Babylon Panthers added one more piece of hardware to their championship shelf for the 2012 season – The Suffolk County Rutgers Trophy.

The Rutgers Trophy, awarded to the best football team in the county as voted upon by the Suffolk County Football Coaches Association, was given to the Babylon Panthers after winning both the Long Island and Suffolk County Class IV Championships.

The 12-0 team and school officials were very excited by the award – the first time Babylon had ever been given the trophy in the 84-year history of the school.

"I am very honored to receive such a prestigious award," said Head Coach Rick Punzone. "I would like to thank the Rutgers Committee for recognizing our team."

"We are proud to accept the Rutgers Trophy as the most outstanding football team in Suffolk County," said Babylon Athletic Director Michael DeJoseph. "This award is a testament to the leadership of Coach Punzone and his staff, the dedication and effort of the players, and the support of the entire Babylon community. Babylon has a rich football history, without the tradition set by former Babylon coaches and players this accomplishment would not be possible; this award is shared by anyone who has ever worn "the Black Hat"."
