Big Plays Key Babylon Victory Over Mt. Sinai

In Friday night's 16-14 win, the Panthers made the big play at the right time to defeat their Division IV rival.

There were numerous big plays that Babylon football fans were talking about following their team’s Friday night 16–14 win against Mt. Sinai. Plays such as the Mustangs unsuccessful try at a two-point conversion with 1:07 remaining that would have tied the score.

Equally key was the 36-yard field goal that Alex Malhas made in the fourth quarter, after missing two earlier. Just after that, a Frank Mankiewicz fumble was recovered by teammate Nahari Jenkins on a drive that would eventually produce the game-winning touchdown. Without that recovery, the Panthers might not have had the opportunity to extend their lead.

Lost in the many big plays was a 9-yard completion from Babylon’s Zach Fredericks. In the same drive that saw Jenkins’ fumble recovery, the Panthers were faced with a fourth-and-six from the Mt. Sinai 30.

Babylon coach Rick Punzone chose to bypass his running game and he called for a pass. Fredericks responded by connecting with Jacob Carlock over the middle for a gain to the 21, keeping the drive alive. Five plays later, Mankiewicz rumbled off right tackle into the end zone. Malhas’ extra point gave Babylon its 16 – 8 lead, and eventually, the game.
