Fishing Report: Record Heat Isn't Deterring Anglers

Big fish are being caught at all the usual places as the water temperature continues to warm.

Taking a small step back, it was an eventful 4th of July on land and in
the water. Not surprisingly, four fish dominated the long holiday
weekend and the action has only gotten better since then when it comes to fluke, striped bass, sea bass and porgies.

Several more surprises have appeared in local waters like triggerfish and cobia.

Out of Fire Island Inlet, the Northstar II fished in 80 feet of water just south of the inlet and the dozen anglers aboard caught 22 keeper fluke.

Mel Feinberg had a monster 7.25 doormat and eight of the fish weighed in at more than five pounds.

On the Captree JIB VI the party boat on Monday returned with numerous sea bass and porgies. About 200 fish came over the rails with ling in the mix. A boater aboard the Kristen Ann II took his first-ever striped bass which weighed in at 32 pounds in 40 feet of water just west of Fire Island Inlet.

Pete, at Suffolk Bait & Tackle in Babylon, noted that the crabbing action continues to pick up at the Babylon Dock. Best bait has been both fish heads and chicken necks. Two longtime crab men it to be a a great season for them.

The ocean bite off Fire Island has been nothing short of incredible, especially this past weekend as the private charter Reel Obsession was on the fish early and often, with one trip totaling seven striped bass, with the biggest two an impressive 40 and 37-pounds respectively.

Captain Brian reported that the bass were "crashing the baits up top," as the stripers chased large school of bunker. The bass, running in pods, have been the talk of the town the past few weeks. These are big, agressive fish and they are out in numbers.

Endurance Charters, out of Fire Island, also had a great day with the mahi last Sunday, heading out of south of center of the rose, fishing in 75-degree water. There was also some hot and heavy mako shark action.

There were two reports of Kingfish being caught last week, with both of the anglers using 3/0 circle hooks baited with clams to reel in the catches and surprisingly, these are super fast fish. One angler, Johnny, said he managed to land a schoolie bass as well as two nice small stripers on the same trip.
