Lady Panthers Softball Win Long Island Championship

Varsity softball team makes fourth straight appearance in LIC; will move on in state playoffs.

Make it three seasons in a row with at least one Long Island Championship team at Babylon High School – the Lady Panthers took home the title with a 7-6 win over Nassau County champion East Rockaway to win the Class B title at St. Joseph's College on Tuesday.

Eighth grader Gwen Donaldson drove in the tying run in the bottom of the seventh with a one-out triple and was followed up by Miranda Richards, who lined a single that drove in Donaldson, giving Babylon the 7-6 walk-off win, according to Newsday.

"Gwen got me going with that big hit," Richards told Newsday. "I prayed and swung and was able to clear my mind just in time."

The game was Babylon's fourth consecutive appearance in the Long Island Championship and for coach Rick Punzone, the girl's can't lose attitude has helped propel the team this season.

"We've been playing behind all year," Punzone said to Newsday. "We've always found a way to win. It's a tribute to these girls. This doesn't get old."

The Lady Panthers, now 17-5 on the 2013 season, will face Marlboro today at 4 p.m. at St. Joseph's College in the Southeast State Regional final.
