Football

Babylon faced Port Jefferson last Saturday, wondering whether the 4-1 Royals were a real threat. By halftime, however, the Panthers erased any doubt that Port Jefferson still has a ways to go before they can contend for a league title, as Babylon won easily, 40 – 0.

Sparked by Eric Schweitzer’s first-quarter 36-yard punt return for a touchdown, Babylon added three touchdowns in the second quarter and the Panther defense did the rest. Royal quarterback Dan Serignese completed just five of 16 passes for 74 yards and was intercepted twice and the Babylon running game played keep away. Frank Mankiewicz led all rushers with 103 yards. He also scored a touchdown. Nahari Jenkins added 59 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Zach Fredericks was 3-4 for 23 yards. He hooked up with Greg Dieterich on an 11-yard touchdown pass. Babylon hosts Mt. Sinai (5-1) Friday night.
