Panther Notebook: Varsity Squad Updates

Patch offers up a team update for the week of October 2 through October 8.

All you need to do is look at the daily Patch events calendar and you'll see that there always seems to be a Panther varsity team on a local field.

To help readers keep up on all the teams' progress, Patch posts a weekly update of highlights and game scores.

Football: Quarterback Zach Fredericks rushed for 163 yards and a touchdown, and threw for another in Babylon’s 43 – 27 win at Bayport last Thursday. Running back Grant Shannon rushed for119 yards and three touchdowns.

Current Record: 3-2 in Division IV

Boys soccer: In their only game last week, the Panthers lost to undefeated Southampton 6 – 1. Babylon ended the first down by just one goal, 2 – 1, but could not hold off Southampton’s relentless attack. Alex Malhas scored the Panther’s only goal.

Current Record: 1-4 in League VII

Girls Soccer: A scoring drought hit the girls soccer team last week, as they were shut out twice. First, they were shut out at home by Mt. Sinai 3 – 0 last Tuesday. Two days later, they lost 1 – 0 to Mattituck. Hannah McGlinchey made17 saves in a valiant effort to keep the game within reach.

Current Record: 2-4-1 in League VII

Field Hockey: It was an especially tough week for the field hockey team, which started the week facing off against top-ranked Sayville. Despite Dotty Barker’s 17 saves, the Panthers lost 3 – 0 to the undefeated Golden Flashes. Later in the week, Hannah Walsh gave Babylon an early 1 – 0 lead against Bayport-Blue Point. But the Phantoms would tie the game in the second half and win on penalty strokes.

Current Record: 3-4 in Division II

Girls Cross Country: Babylon remains winless after a 15 – 50 loss to undefeated Bayport-Blue Point last week.

Current Record: 0-3 in League VII

Girls Volleyball: Babylon started the week with a non-league win at Huntington, winning 3 – 0 in games. Against Hampton Bays, the Panthers had the tables turned on them, losing 3 – 0 in league play.

Current Record: 1-5 in League VII
