George Brunnhoelzl, a West Babylon resident, took hom the checkered flag from the Firecracker 150 in NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour in Asheboro, North Carolina on Friday, according to NASCAR.com.
Brunnhoelzl began the day in style by being the fastest driver during practice runs and then proceeded to win his third pole position of the season. He led the entire race from start-to-finish to take over the all-time wins on the Southern Modified Tour with 14, previously held by Pennsylvannia's L.W. Miller.
Brunnhoelzl told NASCAR.com after the race he dedicated the race to his newborn daughter, Riley Morgan, who was born last week here on Long Island.
“This win is for my daughter Riley,” said Brunnhoelzl to NASCAR.com. “I am so proud of my daughter and my wife Heather who is home resting.”
Brunnhoelzl extended his lead to 29 points over Miller in the championship point standings.
“It was a storybook race for us,” Brunnhoelzl said to NASCAR.com. “We led practice, won the pole and led all the laps in the race which is what we needed to do today."
