"Blue Moon" Hangs Low Over Babylon Village

Rare astronomical occurrence shows off one the summer's brightest full moons.

Babylon Village residents might have been humming the tune of the Frank Sinatra classic "Blue Moon" on Tuesday night as our area encountered a clear sky during a rare astronomical phenomenon.

A "blue moon" has nothing to do with color, per se, but rather the occurrence of the Moon at its full phase appearing twice in a single month.

The phenomenon is rare – usually only occurring once every two to three years.

The August 2013 version came with an added feat – it was the third full moon in what will be four for the Summer. Seasons usually only feature three full moon phases.

That phenomenon happens, of course, only "once in a blue moon."
