Heat Wave Set to Make a Comeback

After last week's heat wave left Long Island feeling like a frying pan on a hot stove, another round of hot weather is coming.

The Heat Wave is making a comeback to remind you summer just started!

Forecasts for the South Shore of Long Island are calling for much warmer temperatures to start affect temperatures as soon as Thursday afternoon. High temperatures are forecasted to be around 87 degrees, according to the National Weather Service, although a slight breeze and low humidity will make Thursday the best out of the next five days ahead.

Friday through Monday might as well have been a – highs on Friday will hover around 90 degrees as the humidity builds in. Saturday through Monday will be between 87 and 89 degrees, pushing to hit the 90 degree mark. High humidity will make it feel anywhere between 5 to 10 degrees warmer than it actually is. Pop-up isolated thunderstorms should be expected throughout the afternoons of all four days, with some storms being severe and producing lightning and possibly hail.

With soaring temperatures and building humidity, it will become important once again to remain hydrated at all times. Take frequent breaks from the sun in the shade – the temperature is always about 10 degrees cool and less harmful to your skin there. Here are some more tips for beating the heat:

  • Most town and village beaches are now open to help you cool down.
  • The spray parks at Tanner Park and Venetian Shores are officially opened for the season for children to use.
  • Check out the Babylon Village Patch Summer Guide for ideas on activities and events to keep your mind off of the weather.
  • Wear clothing that is light in color and loose fitting – darker colors absorb more heat and tighter clothing will prevent your body from letting heat escape.
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Sugar-filled drinks like soda should be avoided as they burn through your body faster when heated.
  • Take frequent breaks from any physical activities throughout the day.
  • Wear sunscreen – the excess ozone and clear skies will cause skin burns, especially for those of us more fairly toned.

Babylon Village Patch will keep you updated throughout the next five days on the sultry weather conditions, available cooling centers and any alerts you need to be on top of. Remember to keep cool, Babylon!
