Suffolk To Spray For Mosquitos In Select Costal Areas

Officials say residents do not need to take precautions prior to spraying.

The Suffolk County Department of Public Works’ Division of Vector Control on Tuesday will treat parts of several salt marshes in Babylon Town by helicopter to control mosquito larvae. Should weather conditions prevent completion of the work, it will be continued on the next suitable day.

Vector Control will use Altosid liquid concentrate in a low altitude, large droplet liquid application. The treatments are slated for Tuesday between 5 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Areas to be treated include Sore Thumb, Oak Beach, Oak Beach North, West Gilgo, Gilgo, Cedar Beach, Cedar Beach Golf Course and Oak Island.

The products used by Suffolk County Vector Control are registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and are applied in accordance with the required state and federal permits.

No precautions are recommended to prepare for this spraying, as the helicopter will be flying at a very low level over marsh areas and taking other precautions to control drift into inhabited areas. Human exposure from this operation is unlikely and the products involved have no significant human toxicity.
