Surviving the Summer Sizzler: Friday

Today's forecasted high is 92 and with higher humidity, it will be more important than ever to keep yourself cool.

Another heat wave is upon us as today's forecasted high temperatures from the National Weather Service is a sultry 92 degrees. Add in building humidity and you will have an outside temperature that will make it feel like it's between 95 and 98 degrees.

The weekend forecast does not look much better – highs will stay close to the 90 degree mark throughout with humidity continuing to build up. The temperatures are not expected to drop off until around Monday afternoon when a weak cold front will push through.

In addition, pop-up isolated thunderstorms are expected every day, so keep an eye out for potentially dangerous storms.

The National Weather Service has not issued any warnings or advisories concerning the heat yet, but precautions should still be taken today as though these have been posted. Here's the latest advisories, places to cool down and tips on how to help yourself beat the heat:

  • The National Weather Service has issued an Air Quality Alert for Suffolk County. The hot temperatures will create an excess of ozone in our air, which will keep polluted air from further dispersing and creating unhealthy breathing conditions. The elderly, young and ill should be kept from long periods outdoors. This alert is in effect until 10:00pm tonight.
  • The Town of Babylon has not announced the opening of any cooling centers as of yet. Suffolk County cooling centers are not open yet either.
  • All Town and Village beaches are now officially open – please note it costs $15 to park at Cedar Beach and $30 to park at Gilgo Beach weekdays without a permit.
  • The spray parks at Tanner Park and Venetian Shores are officially opened for the season for children to use.
  • Check out the Babylon Village Patch Summer Guide for ideas on activities and events to keep your mind off of the weather.
  • Wear clothing that is light in color and loose-fitting – darker colors absorb more heat and tighter clothing will prevent your body from letting heat escape.
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Sugar-filled drinks like soda should be avoided as they burn through your body faster when heated.
  • Take frequent breaks from any physical activities throughout the day.
  • Wear sunscreen – the excess ozone and clear skies will cause skin burns, especially for those of us more fairly toned.
