Farmer's Market Update: Possible Summer Start

The Babylon Village Farmer's Market committee is hoping for a July start date.

A committee of residents working on getting a new farmer's market up and running in the village met last week at Village Hall, and the market may open this July. Mayor Ralph Scordino gave the green light to a summer start, assuming that the potential vendors are in place.

Committee member Joann Donnelly reported that the organizer of G & G Long Island Winter Farmer's Market is interested in participating. G & G runs indoor farmer's markets in Northport and West Hills County Park. They are also opening a Friday afternoon farmer's market in Amityville starting in June. The growers' market manages and supplies all the vendors, insurance, set-up and clean-up.

Locations for the Babylon location were discussed at the meeting; the municipal parking lot east of Deer Park Avenue was considered but traffic flow patterns were a concern. The most likely spot, according to Mayor Scordino, will be the parking lot just north of the train tracks and west of the strip of stores on North Carll Avenue.

The committee settled on Sunday mornings for the market time. Possible vendors include Goodale Farms in Aquebogue, Orchards of Concklin, a pickle seller, sunflower vendors, and other produce farmers.

The market would run through the November growing season and then pick up next June.
