Little Heroes Celebration Draws Hundreds to Village

Children enjoy a day away from the post-Sandy rebuilding at First Presbyterian.

Babylon Village burst with new life and energy on Saturday morning as the Little Heroes celebration at the First Presbyterian Church helped Hurricane Sandy survivors continue to get back on their feet.

The event, aimed at giving the children that have dealt with the after-effects of the storm over the last six months, featured live entertainment, cotton candy, an opened playground, arts and crafts, and a Chinese auction for toys. The event was further backed by an absolutely beautiful day, with the sun shining down and not a cloud to be found.

"We had a lot of families sign up before this," noted Neighbors Supporting Neighbors' Kim Skillen. She said phones were ringing off the hook up until the night before, all families looking to come to the event to enjoy the fun. She said they never expect such a turnout.

"I think we might get as many as 600 families here today."

The local volunteer support group Neighbors Supporting Neighbors Babylon put on the celebration with the assistance of other local groups such as Lindy Manpower. Representatives from FEMA, Project Hope and Island Harvest were on hand for the adults looking to get questions answers or some extra help.

In addition to the Chinese Auctions, the groups raffled off gift cards for families totaling over $3,000 and had tons of extra supplies on hand for residents to take home.
