Students Host Evening Walk to Support Breast Cancer Research

Babylon teens are organizing a candlelit walk in honor of October being breast cancer awareness month and to support a local organization.

To help promote awareness and in support of October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, Babylon High school students will host an evening walk to benefit the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition.

The lights on the school's athletic field will remain off and candles will light the track Wednesday night. The Senior High Student council will be selling glow necklaces, bracelets, and other “pink” items. No fee will be charged to participate. The will start at 7 p.m. on October 12.

According to student organizers it is all about community support of one idea, this year being support of breast cancer research.

Students hope community residents will come out, wear pink, and enjoy the time together for a cause. All proceeds made from the sale of pink items will be donated to the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC.)

Tess Helfman, BBCC president, said the event is important for many reasons.

“Community involvement is the cornerstone of our organization and just as important as fundraising, is the need to create awareness and an understanding that we must not only think about service in our community, we must also be supporting the research to eradicate diseases such as breast cancer," said Helfman.

"It is so wonderful to know that our young people embrace this need and are exhibiting a desire to make a difference by creating such an inspiring respectful event that is an open invitation for the entire community to participate in and show its solidarity.”

The BBCC is a nonprofit volunteer organization dedicated to various breast and gynecological cancer concerns. Founded in 1993, the BBCC continues to be a grass-roots organization, providing an array of patient support services, education and advocacy programs.
