Thrift Shop Scoop of the Week: Farmhouse Table

An in-demand piece of furniture turned up at the West Babylon Salvation Army for a fraction of retail price.

Every decorator and wannabe HGTV fan knows about the coveted farmhouse table: whether distressed, reclaimed, made out of barn doors, or polished to perfection by a major furniture retailer, the oversized, square wooden table anchors many fashionable dining rooms.

The Salvation Army on Route 109 in West Babylon currently has a version that will only set you back $50 (which wouldn't even cover the delivery on the $4,000 Williams Sonoma model).

The table has a honey-colored wood finish, turned legs, and a leaf. The lines are perfect and a refinishing job would put the finishing touches on the modern country, eclectic, or transitional design look you're going for. Lack of chairs shouldn't be an obstacle; check out shelter magazines to see how mismatched loveseats and modern chairs are put up against classic wood tables for the current dining room look.

You'll have to hurry, though. There's no guarantee this piece will last.
