West Babylon Eagle Scout Honored

The teenager receives the prestigious award after organizing beach grass planting at Babylon Village Pool.

West Babylon's Elliot Courtney joined a prestigious club when he was awarded an Eagle Scout Award recently. Ten years after joining Troop 175, Courtney was presented with the award and a proclamation from local officials, including Suffolk County Legislator Wayne R. Horsley and Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer, with Elliot’s family members, friends, and peers in attendance.

En route to achieving elite Eagle Scout status, Elliot earned 42 Merit Badges and served as Assistant Senior Patrol Leader. According to Legislator's Horsley's office, Elliot demonstrated a unique commitment to leadership, scholarship and service to his community. For his Eagle Project, he conceived, planned, funded and supervised 27 Scouts and volunteers to reclaim and stabilize the beach by the Babylon Village pool with 2,000 plugs of beach grass, and the construction of two sturdy benches. The grasses helped the beach avoid major erosion during Tropical Storm Irene. The project took over 35 people and 144 hours to complete.
