Freeze Warning In Effect Island-Wide Tonight
Growing season "likely over" as temperatures expected to slip below 32 degrees tonight.
The first freeze of the fall season is expected to hit tonight with temperatures dropping below 32 degrees Fahrenheit for an extended period tonight into tomorrow morning.
The National Weather Service has placed all of Long Island, as well as parts of Connecticut and New Jersey, into a Freeze Warning from 10 p.m. this evening until 9 a.m. Monday.
Forecasters called for temperatures to plummet into the upper 20's to lower 30's during the night for the first time since last winter. The forecasted low for this evening is 30 degrees.
Residents are advised to bring in sensitive plants to keep them from freezing, which could cause death, the National Weather Service said in a statement. The chilling temperatures are also expected to bring to an end the growing season on Long Island.
A Freeze Warning is issued when below freezing temperatures are imminent and conditions are likely to kill crops or other sensitive vegetation.
The cold will not stick around for too long, though. Temperatures are expected to bounce back in a big way this week, with highs in the low 60's by Wednesday.
