Small Plane Lands on Rt. 231 in Babylon Village

No one injured in landing on two-lane highway on Babylon/West Islip border.

A small plane landed on Route 231 in Babylon Village at around 1 p.m., according to police.

A Suffolk County Police Department spokeswoman said a report of small plane landing on the roadway's southbound shoulder came into the department at around 12:53 p.m. The plane landed near the John Street exit, north of Montauk Highway.

No one was injured during the landing, the police spokeswoman told Patch.

CBS reporter Carolyn Gusoff tweeted earlier than the pilot, David Windmiller, said his engine stalled mid-flight. He told Gusoff he picked Route 231 as a safe spot to land.

FAA spokesman Jim Peters told Newsday the home-built, single-engine plane made a hard landing, signifying some type of distress. The plane is registered to Dan B. Wright of Santa Barbara, CA.

Peters told Newsday he did not know where the flight originated or why it needed to land.

Route 231 is currently closed as officials investigate the scene.
